Fresh Juice – Another Way To Get Your Daily Servings

Having trouble getting in your 8 servings of fruits and veggies daily?  Well, here’s a delicious way to get in those servings and cut out the bad sugar found in most juices.

According to the folks over at 5ADay (great site!), it is recommended that I get 2 servings of fruits and 3 servings of vegetables daily.  Daily!  As in everyday.  Not only that, but 1/3 of that should be raw.  Honestly, I sometimes fall short of the recommendation.  Until I found an additional, no-brainer way to help me remember.

juicingforlifeSome time last year I came across a book entitled Juicing for Life: A Guide to the Benefits of Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juicing.  I didn’t own a juicer at the time, but it was only $4 so I decided to give it a read.  I was thinking about it getting a juicer, so why not pull the cart before the horse.

A few months later my father called and told me he had a Juiceman Jr. Automatic Juice Extractor for me if I wanted it.  It wasn’t new, but very usable.  Not thinking about the book I told him I would take it off his hands.  It took a month or two before I remembered to get it from him.  And, another month or two before I actually used it.  I know, it’s sad, but true.

Thinking back, I may have been visualizing one of the larger machines on the market and wondering where I was going to store it when not in use.  Fortunate for me, I didn’t have to worry about that.  This is the smaller model and I was able to tuck it out of the way when I wasn’t experimenting.

I dug out my book and started reading about the benefits of juicing.  I was fine until I got to the science behind the juice and then it was off to the recipe section (don’t worry, I eventually went back and read it).  One major benefit of juicing I love is getting your fruits and vegetables raw, in one shot.  You get all the nutrients that food has to offer.  It’s not boiled, baked or cooked to death.  It’s the fresh, pure juice of the food.  Another fact I learned is that we miss a lot of nutrients that can be found in the skin, seeds and stems of some foods such as grapes and apples.

Juicing also allows you to take advantage of all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your food has to offer.

This book takes you through three sections.

  1. The Basics – teaches you about nutrients found in different foods and the benefits of juicing
  2. Disorders – this section targets specific ailments and gives you nutritional information, recipes and suggests to help combat them
  3. Diet Plans – this sections has information for everyday use and cleansing diets, to weight loss diets

Not in the market for a juicer?  You’re still in luck!  Most fitness center, spas, specialty stores and wellness center have juice bars available with a number of delicious combinations.  If you can’t bring the juice to you, then go to a place where you can get it hassle free.
