This is going to a very busy weekend for me. I am looking forward to hearing live music, eating good food and shopping from some of the most eclectic vendors from around the country.
Friday – Sunday
will find me at the West Oak Lane Jazz Festival. The festival runs from Friday June 19th, through Sunday June 21st. Labeled the biggest jazz festival on the east coast, this event has grown over the years and is getting a lot of recognition in the jazz community. This year’s musical headliners include WAR, Tina Marie, Billy Paul, Jeffrey Osborne, Original P, Tower of Power, Roy Ayers, Average White Band, The Mingus Big Band, The Whispers and The Intruders. It’s 3 days of coming together, enjoying great jazz and old school artists. Who wouldn’t love that?
And let’s not forget about the shopping! There will be delicious foods to taste and savor, hand made art, jewelry and a Visual Artists area.
We have rounded up some of the most talented artists in the world of ethnic art and created the feast-for-the-eyes Art Pavilion, featuring the works of Poncho Brown, Adrienne Mills, Dane Tilghman, Deborah Shedrick and Jose Sebourne.
The organization has put out a great brochure with details of all the acts and activities. There are free shuttles running from Center City, select Regional Rails stops and Belmont Ave & City Avenue. So park your car and take a stress free ride to and from the festivities.
Saturday (June 20)
will find me at the Summer Solstice Celebration, taking place at the Kimmel Center. It’s 19 hours of fun, dancing and music. The festivities start on Saturday at 3 pm and ends on Sunday at dawn. Yes! Dawn! We will be celebrating the longest day of the year with activities the whole family can enjoy. For the kiddies there’s face painting, the Please Touch Museum Play Patrol, the Zoo on wheels and so much more.
When the sun goes down, the adults can enjoy dancing, indie music, jazz, classical music and it’s all Live! If you want to relax, you can do that too. There will be chair massages, dance performances and InLiquid’s Art for the Cash Poor outdoor art show. The rising of the sun will be ushered in by an enormous drum circle. BYOD by the way (I better get hopping on making a drum for the event).
WHEW! I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be one tired chick when this is all over.
Sound like something you want to be apart of? Shoot me a note in the comments so me and my flip can find you out and about!
